Photographs travel at their existing resolution, so the PDF is roughly as heavy as the images you started with; a set of 4 MB phone photos makes a file of a similar order, and running it through Compress PDF afterwards is the easy fix for upload limits. Sharpness in the PDF can only match the source image, so shoot in good light and hold the camera parallel to the page for readable results.
