Numbered pages are what make a document usable in a meeting: people can say 'page seven' instead of 'the one with the table'. Page numbers adds a clean 3 / 12 style counter to the bottom of every page, aligned left, centre or right, which also reveals immediately if a page has gone missing from a printed stack.
How to add page numbers to a PDF
- 1Add the PDF you want to number.
- 2Choose whether the number sits at the bottom left, centre or right.
- 3Run the tool and download the numbered document.
When to number pages and what to expect
Numbering is worth adding to anything that will be printed, signed, reviewed or filed: contracts and their annexes, court and tender submissions, handbooks, theses, minutes and merged bundles assembled from several sources. The 'current / total' format is particularly useful for physical documents, because a reader can see at a glance that they are holding all twelve pages rather than nine of them.
Numbers are drawn as vector text in the bottom margin, so they stay crisp on screen and in print, and the rest of the page is left exactly as it was - existing text stays selectable and file size grows only marginally. Choose the alignment with binding in mind: bottom right is conventional for single-sided documents, bottom centre is the safest choice when pages may be bound on either edge or printed double-sided. A couple of things to expect: numbering always starts at 1 on the first page and counts every sheet, including covers, and the counter is placed in a fixed bottom position, so on a page whose own content already reaches the very bottom edge the two can sit close together. If the original already carries printed numbers, you will now have two sets - trim or renumber deliberately. Everything is processed in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked about Page numbers
Can I start numbering from a different page or number?
Not currently - counting begins at 1 on the first page and includes every sheet. Extract the section you want numbered, number it, then merge it back if you need to skip a cover.
What format are the numbers in?
Each page shows its position and the document total, like 3 / 12, which makes missing pages in a printed stack obvious.
Where exactly are the numbers placed?
In the bottom margin, aligned left, centre or right as you choose. Bottom centre is the safest option for double-sided printing.
Will the numbers overlap my content?
Rarely, but they sit at a fixed bottom position, so pages whose content extends to the very edge can look tight. Check the result before printing.
The PDF already has printed numbers - what happens?
You will end up with two sets, since existing numbers are part of the page content. Delete or renumber the original sequence in an editor first if that matters.
Does adding numbers affect quality or searchability?
No. The numbers are vector text added on top; existing content is untouched and stays fully selectable and searchable.
