A watermark tells anyone holding a page what its status is before they read a word: DRAFT, CONFIDENTIAL, SAMPLE, COPY or a client name. Watermark PDF stamps your own text diagonally across every page at the transparency you choose, so the marking is unmistakable while the underlying content stays perfectly legible.
How to add a watermark to a PDF
- 1Add the PDF you want to mark.
- 2Type your watermark text and choose an opacity from very light to strong.
- 3Run the tool and download the stamped document.
Choosing watermark text and opacity
Watermarking is standard practice whenever a document circulates before it is final or beyond the team that owns it: draft contracts sent for comment, quotes that must not be mistaken for invoices, sample chapters, internal reports shared with a supplier, or teaching material you would rather not see re-published. A short, upper-case word or two reads best at a diagonal; long sentences shrink to fit and lose their impact.
The mark is drawn as real vector text on top of each page, so it stays sharp at any zoom and when printed, and the text underneath remains fully selectable and searchable. Opacity is the trade-off to think about: very light and light stay clearly visible without competing with body text, which suits documents people actually need to read, while medium and strong make casual reuse of a page much less appealing at the cost of some legibility over dense paragraphs. File size grows only marginally. Two honest caveats: a watermark is a visual deterrent, not security - anyone with a PDF editor can remove it, so use encryption or access control if you need real protection - and the stamp is applied permanently to the copy you download, so keep your unmarked original safe. Processing happens locally, with no upload.
Frequently asked about Watermark PDF
Which opacity should I choose?
Light is the usual choice: clearly visible but easy to read through. Step up to medium or strong when discouraging reuse matters more than comfortable reading.
Can I remove the watermark later?
Not with this tool - the stamp becomes part of the downloaded file. Always keep your unmarked original, and re-run the tool if you need a different wording.
Does a watermark protect my document?
It deters casual reuse and labels the document's status, but it is not security. Someone with a PDF editor can strip it, so use encryption for genuine protection.
Is the text still selectable under the mark?
Yes. The watermark is drawn as a separate layer of vector text, so the original content stays intact and searchable.
Can I watermark only some pages, or use an image?
The tool stamps text on every page. For selected pages, extract them, watermark that file and merge it back; image watermarks are not supported yet.
How long can the watermark text be?
Short phrases work best. Longer text is scaled down to fit the page diagonal, which makes it harder to read at a glance.
